Here’s where we start! This month, we’re focusing on HEALTH, creating new habits that support eating wisely, moving regularly, sleeping well, and mindfully restoring your energy. Vitality refers to the state of feeling alive and alert – to having available energy. Being vital and energetic is part of what it means to be fully functioning and psychologically well. The Human Body is Unlimited in Potential!
Ready to boost your vitality?
Here are some proven enablers: nutrition, sleep, physical activity, balancing stress with calm, breath, sunlight, nature, alignment and ergonomics, sexuality and sensuality, and touch. Let’s explore a few of these more closely, with suggestions for specific habits you might want to consider for each.
Eat Wisely
Create habits that make healthy eating the easiest possible option. Think about choosing foods with less fat, fewer carbs, minimal processed sugar, and more protein to feel healthier. Habits to consider:
- Cut fruits and vegetables ahead of time and make them easy to grab, even on the go.
- Plan your meals and shopping list for the week.
- Make meals on the weekend and have them ready to go on weekdays.
Move Regularly
It’s safe to say that we’ve all been more sedentary than normal these past couple of years. Between office work, binge watching Netflix, and staying at home… well, have you heard ‘sitting is the new smoking?’ Scary, right?! Any movement counts toward your wellbeing. What works for you?
- Walk every day for at least 30 minutes. (Even 15 can make a difference!) Walking releases endorphins that help improve your mood and trigger positive feelings in the body.
- Stretch daily.
- Learn yoga.
- Train for a 5K or marathon in 2022.
Sleep Well
Losing just 90 minutes of sleep has been found to reduce your daytime alertness by nearly one-third. This could be the reason you achieve less at work, skip regular exercise, or don’t plan healthy meals. Sleep habits might include:
- Turn off technology an hour before bed. (The light interferes with your sleep hormones.)
- Go to bed and get up at the same time, every day.
- Plan your next day before you go to bed, instead of keeping the “to-do” list in your head.
Restore Mindfully
Your energy is a finite resource. When you expend too much without sufficient recovery, eventually your body may burnout. I know I feel this by mid-afternoon! Consider habits like these:
- Take time each week for activities that you enjoy. (I love adult coloring!)
- Listen to a favorite song or artist. (I start my day listening to my favorite music while I put on my makeup.)
- Take small breaks during the day: take a short walk, stretch, or walk the stairs a couple of times.
Your Focus this Week
Here’s an exercise to help you decide what habits you want to create this month because The Human Body is Unlimited in Potential:
- Think of the last time you felt vital.
- What were you doing? What was it like?
- Which components of vitality do you currently practice? Which do you need more of?
Keep going, keep growing…
